'Westeros Map' is suspended on App Store

'Westeros Map' application activity on App Store was suspended by Apple per request from Random House Inc. We would like to thank all our customers who enjoyed 'Westeros Map' evolution during the last year. We'd recommend all users to backup the application because it's unclear if it would be on App Store again. Here is guide that would help you to do backup.

Request was made by Jeff Weber, Online & Digital Sales VP of Random House. We think it is attempt to remove strong competition to their 'Worlds of Ice and Fire' app.

Thanks!

  1. That's just ridiculous. Surely if you are within the law you can take them to court?

    1. We are located outside the US. And it is quite unrealistic for indie to sue Random House.

  4. Sorry to hear this. I was just about to write about Westeros Map in a post on my own blog about ASoIaF apps for the iPad. Am glad that I was able to get it while I could :-)

A thought: perhaps it was removed because it was charging people who got the app for full access to its features (complete map, city maps etc.)? I think you might have been okay without doing that but as soon as the app began asking for money, then there was *serious* grounds for copyright infringement.

Like I said, just a thought. You could consider making it a completely free app and re-submitting it for the App Store. That would probably be much more acceptable to the good people at Random House :-)

    1. GRRM, Random House and HBO knew about the application for more than year(first release was for Android in November, 2011). RH started this mess only after they released their own mobile app in November, 2012. They also asked Google to remove completely free(!) Android version of Westeros Map from Google Play so your assumption about paid features isn't true.

Anyway, I'm glad you like the app. Please be sure to backup it :)

    2. Wait... so Martin himself knew about it all this time??

Dang. Those Random House lawyers are something else... :-(

  5. a cydia release would be perfect. I would love to buy new characters. If you do a cydia release, please include all the characters from the books as in app purchase.

    Thanks!

  6. Please fix the 'crash upon launch' issue which seems to be affecting most 4.1.2+ devices!

  7. What can we as fans to do make sure the app gets back on the store? Your map is a hundred times better than the one on the other app. Is GRRM himself involved in the app from Random House? I would be bery dissapponted if he was coz i remember reading his endorsement of ur map

    1. GRRM isn't involved into this. As I know, Random House hold all rights to the ASoIaF and acts as they want.
Apple would restore app on the App Store if Random House say yes.

    4. Unfortunately, not. The only way was to keep application binary in iTunes

  12. I'm in a similar situation as Omesh - I didn't have the app backed up in iTunes and I had to reinstall everything when I updated to iOS6. Imagine my surprise when Westeros map wasn't in my iPad and when I found out it had been removed from the store.

I would love a Cydia release, if possible. However, I'm afraid it would be impossible to restore the in-app purchases in the Cydia version? How would they be done? I would hate to buy everything again, and would love if all add-ins would be instantly available in the new release.

Also, a bit more unofficially, someone could make the .ipa file of Westeros map available somewhere in the internet. Just say if it can be found somewhere, and I'll find it.

  13. Is there anywhere to donate? I am still really hoping for a cydia release or to get ahold of an .ipa file somewhere
